CHANGAN CS85 COUPE is the first mid-size coupe SUV (or crossover SUV) in CHANGAN Auto's CS line-up, as well as the brand's first SUV model to adopt a coupe-inspired design language. Anchored by the brand slogan "Live with Attitude", it targets the emerging middle-class buyer who prioritises style, performance, and technology. The CS85 made its official debut aboard a cruise ship in Sanya, Hainan, China on 6 March 2019. As of 2026, the variants on sale are primarily the 2023 and 2025 iterations, with official retail prices ranging between RM119,900 and RM164,900, accompanied by showroom discounts of several thousand ringgit.

Positioned as a mid-size coupe SUV with a strict five-seater layout, the CS85 COUPE centres on three core pillars: design, performance, and smart connectivity. Primarily aimed at younger buyers seeking distinctive styling and an engaging drive, its direct rivals include Chinese domestic coupe SUVs such as the Geely Xingyue and Haval F7x. At its initial launch in 2019, CHANGAN first rolled out four 2.0T variants paired with an Aisin 8-speed automatic transmission—dubbed "Xing", "Dong", "Pin", and "Zhi"—priced from RM136,900 to RM169,900. In June of the same year, a 1.5T variant joined the stable, lowering the barrier to entry to RM119,900 to capture a broader audience. The 2023 model year offered six variants across both 1.5T and 2.0T powertrains, whereas the 2025 line-up was streamlined into three core configurations: 1.5T Luxury, 1.5T Premium, and 2.0T Flagship.
The exterior styling of the CS85 COUPE is undeniably its most defining visual hallmark. Built around CHANGAN's signature "Yuyue" design philosophy, the front fascia is dominated by an expansive "butterfly-wing" grille intricately laced with chrome accents and high-gloss black elements, with the lower apron drawing inspiration from the traditional Chinese Jade Ruyi. LED star-diamond headlamps come standard across the range, while higher-spec variants gain LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and automatic headlamp functionality. Along the flanks, a sleek, dome-like fastback roofline sweeps dramatically downwards from behind the B-pillar, which, paired with a segmented dual shoulder line, delivers an athletic crossover silhouette. Around the back, range-topping variants sport quad exhaust tailpipes (twin on each side) and an integrated ducktail lip spoiler to underscore its sporting intent.
In terms of exterior dimensions, the SUV measures 4,728 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width, and 1,665 mm in height (2025 model), with a wheelbase of 2,705 mm—placing it squarely in mid-size SUV territory. The 2025 update introduced a "Nebula Purple" exterior paint, utilizing a specialised pearlescent coating to produce a gradient effect. Inside, the cabin embraces a wrap-around interstellar cockpit theme, with the centre console angled 7° towards the driver. The dual-tone red-and-black interior is dressed in soft-touch microfibre leather, highlighted by matte electroplated garnish and 64-colour dynamic ambient lighting for an upmarket, pseudo-luxury atmosphere.
The CS85 COUPE is available with two turbocharged petrol powertrains—a 1.5T and a 2.0T—each paired with a dedicated transmission to cater to different driving needs.
The 1.5T variant is powered by the new-generation Blue Core NE1.5T high-pressure direct-injection four-cylinder engine (code JL473ZQ7). Equipped with 350-bar direct injection, it delivers 138 kW (approx. 188 PS) and 300 Nm of peak torque, mated to a Blue Core 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (7DCT). Under the WLTC test cycle, it returns a combined fuel consumption of 7.0 litres per 100 km on RON 92 petrol, with a rated top speed of 190 km/h.
The 2.0T variant employs the Blue Core D20TGDI turbocharged direct-injection engine, churning out 171 kW (approx. 233 PS) and 360 Nm of torque. Drive is sent through an Aisin third-generation 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission (8AT)—a revered powertrain combination that served as a headline selling point at launch. The official 0–100 km/h sprint is completed in 7.5 to 8.0 seconds, with real-world tests clocking the 2.0T at 7.5 seconds. Top speed is rated at 210 km/h, alongside an NEDC combined fuel consumption of around 8.2 litres per 100 km. All variants are strictly front-engine, front-wheel drive (FF) with a transverse engine orientation; no all-wheel-drive (AWD) option is offered.
The CS85 COUPE sits on a monocoque chassis featuring an all-independent suspension arrangement—MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear, a standard configuration for mainstream mid-size SUVs. The front lower control arms are constructed from double-layer stamped steel to balance structural rigidity and unsprung mass, while the rear multi-link geometry is tuned to keep body roll in check and enhance cornering composure. Steering is handled by a speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) rack, offering effortless low-speed manoeuvring and a weighted feel at highway speeds. Bosch’s 9th-generation Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is standard across the range, integrating ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control (TCS), and Hill Hold Control (HHC). Braking duties are handled by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, with higher-spec variants rolling on 19-inch tomahawk-style alloy wheels shod in 225/55 R19 tyres. The chassis dynamics are noticeably geared towards sportiness; while cornering stability is commendable, bump absorption over rough tarmac is rather firm, compromising rear passenger ride comfort to an extent.
Configured as a five-door, five-seater crossover SUV with a 2,705 mm wheelbase, rear legroom in the CS85 COUPE is sufficient for family duties. While standard boot volume is naturally compromised by the sloping fastback roofline, the 60:40 split-folding rear seatbacks allow for versatile cargo expansion.
The digital cockpit represents another major highlight of the CS85 COUPE. Flagship trims boast a twin-screen arrangement comprising a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, seamlessly integrated into the driver-tilted dashboard. The system runs the Tencent Auto Intelligence (TAI) ecosystem, offering onboard WeChat, QQ Music, and Tencent Maps navigation. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Baidu CarLife smartphone mirroring, 4G telematics, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Voice commands are managed by the "Xiao An" smart voice assistant with wake-up-free prompts, allowing control over navigation, multimedia, climate control, and power windows. A flat-bottom D-shaped multifunction steering wheel houses ADAS controls on the left spoke and media toggles on the right. In terms of creature comforts, top-spec models come equipped with an operable panoramic sunroof, all-door one-touch auto power windows, heated front seats, a power-adjustable passenger seat, a rear centre armrest, a wireless charging pad, and 64-colour interior ambient lighting, while audio is piped through an 8-speaker sound system.
On the safety front, the CS85 COUPE was engineered to achieve a five-star C-NCAP crash safety rating. Passive safety is underpinned by a high-strength cage body shell reinforced with thermoformed ultra-high-strength steel in critical zones, backed by six airbags as standard (dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags). Active safety provisions include Bosch’s 9th-generation ESP suite with ABS, EBD, EBA, TCS, HHC, and Hill Descent Control (HDC).
For advanced driver assistance, the CS85 COUPE packs a comprehensive Level 2 semi-autonomous driving suite. Core functions include: Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop&Go (operating from 0–150 km/h), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), automatic cornering speed reduction, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). Real-time ADAS telemetry is visualised on the 10.25-inch instrument display for intuitive monitoring. Parking is aided by a 360-degree surround-view camera system (with kerb-view blind-spot cameras) on higher trims. Standard safety equipment is rounded off by ISOFIX child-seat anchors, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).
Commercial reception of the CS85 COUPE has remained lacklustre over its lifecycle, exemplifying a vehicle that was "widely praised yet poorly sold". Sales figures reveal that since its 2019 rollout, monthly deliveries languished between a few hundred and just over a thousand units. Full-year sales registered 14,469 units in 2022 before tumbling to 1,275 units in 2023. By 2025, annual volume had evaporated to a mere 16 units, sinking to a monthly low of just 4 units—a stark contrast to its CHANGAN CS75 PLUS sibling, which routinely registers five-figure monthly sales.
Beneath the persistent sales slump lies deeply polarised consumer sentiment. Praises largely revolve around its distinctive fastback silhouette and potent 2.0T powertrain. Many owners noted that the coupe styling provided standout road presence for the money, with performance punchy enough for daily commutes and spirited weekend drives. Conversely, critical feedback and quality reliability issues dealt a heavier blow. Consumer grievances heavily concentrated on the Tsingshan dual-clutch transmission in the 1.5T variant, which suffered from jerky engagement, erratic shift logic, and outright loss of drive/gearbox slipping while cruising, permanently tarnishing the model's reputation. Furthermore, compromised rear headroom due to the rakish roofline, mediocre fuel consumption, and sluggish infotainment responsiveness were frequent complaints. Given the minimal vehicle population on the road, its secondhand resale value has suffered drastically.
As CHANGAN Auto's bold foray into the niche coupe SUV arena, the CS85 COUPE was not short on design flair or mechanical merit, with its 2.0T + Aisin 8AT combo representing CHANGAN's engineering pinnacle at the time. Nevertheless, the inherent aesthetic-over-practicality compromise of a fastback body, paired with severe early quality and calibration flaws in the 1.5T gearbox, hindered it from achieving mainstream commercial viability. In contrast to blockbuster nameplates like the CS75 PLUS and CS55, the CS85 COUPE remained relegated to the fringes, virtually disappearing from public roads by 2025. Even so, as a milestone in CHANGAN’s brand upmarket journey, the CS85 remains a memorable chapter in the history of the CS family.
